Biography

Andrew C. Meltzer, MD, MS, FACEP is a Professor of Emergency Medicine and the Chief of the Clinical Research Section at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Meltzer received his MD from SUNY Downstate, completed his residency in Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland and the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, and completed a fellowship in Clinical Research at the University of Maryland.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), serves on the ACEP Clinical Policies Committee and the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) Research Committee, and was an author of the SAEM GRACE-2 Guidelines for Abdominal Pain. As the Director of the Clinical Practice Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CPIE) scholarly track, Dr. Meltzer mentors students and faculty in medical innovation.

Dr. Meltzer is the site principal investigator for the NIH SIREN network and has led several major multi-center clinical trials, including studies on abdominal pain, novel diagnostic strategies for gastrointestinal hemorrhage, medical expulsive therapy for renal colic, and acute management of respiratory distress (HYPERACT trial). As Director of the Research Section, he oversees clinical research in the emergency department with a professional team of research coordinators and an active research fellowship program.

He has contributed to national and international guidelines in emergency medicine, including SAEM guidelines for abdominal pain and international guidelines for the management of gastrointestinal bleeding. Dr. Meltzer practices emergency medicine in community, academic, and military hospital settings, ensuring his research remains clinically relevant. He has also served as chief medical officer for two successful healthcare technology companies.

As of this writing, Dr. Meltzer has authored over 60 peer-reviewed publications in PubMed and has an i10-index of 37.
