Biography

Nicole Mortier is an assistant professor in the Department of Physician Assistant Studies, where her primary teaching responsibilities include general pediatrics, hematology, and evidence based practice/research methods. Prior to joining the GW faculty, Mortier worked clinically in general pediatrics in rural North Carolina, and in pediatric hematology at Duke University and at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She served as the national hematology consultant for the NIH-sponsored Phase 3 SWiTCH (Stroke with Transfusion Changing to Hydroxyurea), SCATE (Sparing Conversion to Abnormal TCD Elevations) and TWiTCH (TCD with Transfusion Changing to Hydroxyurea) multicenter clinical trials. Mortier is a frequent presenter to national and international audiences on topics including hematology, sickle cell disease, and treatment adherence. She has co-authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals. 

Mortier is a PhD candidate in Maternal and Child Health Epidemiology at the University of Illinois-Chicago, School of Public Health. She is currently working on her dissertation in collaboration with the Texas Department of State Health Services Newborn Screening Program, using linked newborn screening and electronic birth records to verify newborn screening coverage in the state of Texas and to explore factors associated with missed newborn screens. She is a peer reviewer for Pediatric Blood & Cancer and serves on the editorial advisory board for the Journal of Physician Assistant Education
