Teaching Interests

In addition to her research, Dr. DeVaul teaches in the anatomical sciences, including human gross anatomy and histology. She enjoys contributing to the development of anatomical education, including devoting time to making connections between different topics. She is currently collaborating with Dr. Kirsten Brown and Dr. Rosalyn Jurjus on anatomical education research projects.

Research

Throughout her graduate career, Dr. DeVaul studied the balance of phosphatase and kinase activity at the centrosome/basal body during development of the flagellum and ciliogenesis. Specifically, she studied the effects of a phosphatase regulator, PPP1R42, on PP1, Nek2, and AurA activity during cilia development in retinal cells and characterizing PPP1R42 in sperm under the guidance of Dr. Ann O. Sperry. During her postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. DeVaul worked on characterizing a mutation in sas-6 to study centrosome stabilization in the C. elegans germ line under the guidance of Dr. Kevin O’Connell. She is currently continuing this project at the NIH.
