Scott D Cohen

Scott D. Cohen MD, MPH, FASN is the Fellowship Program Director in the Division of Kidney Diseases and Hypertension at the George Washington University School of Medicine. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at GW.

Dr. Cohen was Class Valedictorian from Miami Palmetto Senior High School and recipient of the Miami Herald’s Silver Knight Award in honor of his service to the community and contributions to the social sciences. He graduated from the combined BS, MD Honors Program in Medical Education at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society in 2001. Dr. Cohen completed his internal medicine residency at Duke University Medical Center and nephrology fellowship at George Washington University Hospital. He also completed an additional subspecialty fellowship in glomerular diseases at Columbia University New York Presbyterian Hospital and a Master’s in Public Health at George Washington University.

Dr. Cohen is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Nephrology. He is active in medical education and has served as the director of multiple courses at GW medical school including Introduction to Clinical Medicine and the clinical lead of the renal section for the Cardiology-Pulmonary-Renal block taught to first year medical students. He has a strong interest in innovative active based medical education and has assisted in updating the undergraduate and graduate medical education curriculum. He serves on the curriculum committee at GW School of Medicine. Dr. Cohen was recognized for his contributions to education receiving the Distinguished Teacher Award for George Washington University School of Medicine in 2018.

Dr. Cohen’s research interests focus on Psychosocial Issues in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients, HIV associated Kidney Diseases, and Glomerular Diseases. He was the recipient of a two-year National Kidney Foundation Clinical Research Fellowship Grant and has received funding from PCORI to evaluate the impact of antidepressant therapy for hemodialysis patients. He has more than 50 peer reviewed publications including in the New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, and Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. He is the co-editor of the first textbook to address the Psychosocial Aspects of Chronic Kidney Disease to be published in 2020. Dr. Cohen has served as an invited reviewer for the American Journal of Kidney Diseases, the Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Clinical Nephrology and BMC Nephrology.

Dr. Cohen’s clinical interests focus on glomerular diseases, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease and point-of-care kidney ultrasonography. He started the glomerular diseases subspecialty clinic at GW which serves as the tertiary care referral center for management of glomerulonephritis in the Washington DC Region. He also serves as medical director of a local hemodialysis unit. Dr. Cohen has been recognized as a Top Doctor by the Washingtonian and Washington Consumer Checkbook Magazines.

Research

• Novel therapeutic options for the treatment of Glomerulonephritis, HIV Associated Immune Complex Renal Diseases, Psychosocial Issues in Chronic Kidney Disease Patients.
• He is a co-investigator on a PCORI funded research grant to evaluate the impact of antidepressant therapy in end stage renal disease patients on hemodialysis.
