Biography

Susie Lew, M.D., is a professor of medicine at  the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She serves as the director of clinical services at the GW Medical Faculty Associates and medical director for peritoneal dialysis at DaVita K Street.

Dr. Lew received her B.S. from Brooklyn College and her M.D. from SUNY Downstate Medical Center. She completed her medical education in Internal Medicine at Brookdale Medical Center and her fellowship in Nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Lew has been recognized as ‘Top Doctor’ from the Washingtonian Magazine since 2004, “Super Doctors” from the Washington Post since 2011, and “Top Doctors” from US News and World Report in 2013.

Her clinical interest includes peritoneal dialysis, where she cares for the largest number of peritoneal dialysis patients in the DC area. She also has interest in pregnancy related kidney diseases and hypertension, as well as, chronic kidney disease.

Dr. Lew is a Fellow of the American College of Physician, American Society of Nephrology, and National Kidney Foundation, and member of the International Society of Nephrology.

She volunteers at local National Kidney Foundation Health Fairs, and Network 5 Mid-Atlantic Renal Coalition as a Medical Review Board member.  Dr. Lew received the National Kidney Foundation Volunteer Service Award in 2013.

While on faculty at the George Washington University, Dr. Lew has been Medical Director of Chronic Hemodialysis (1991-2013);  Medical Director Acute hemodialysis (1991-2002, 2005-2013); Administrative Medical Director Gambro Healthcare (2001-2004); Medical Director, DaVita Village Health (2008-2009);  Director of the Renal Division Fellowship Program (1988-2006);  Committee member on Appointments, Promotion, and Tenure for the Department of Medicine (1997- present); Interim Director, division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension (2006-2009).

Dr. Lew has consulted for American Board of Internal Medicine (1992-1997); Food and Drug Administration—Devices (since 1996); Amgen Advisory Board (2007-2009); Ortho Biotech Product Advisor (2007); Gambro Renal Products, Inc (2009-2014; and US Food and Drug Administration—Gastroenterology and Urology Devices Panel of FDA’s Medical Devices Advisory Committee (2014-2017) and the American Society of Nephrology.

She reviews for both renal related journals (Kidney International, Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Clinical Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Peritoneal Dialysis International, Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, Clinical Nephrology, and Clinical Kidney Journal) as well as non-renal related journals (International Medical Case Reports Journal, Journal of Diabetes and Endocrinology, British Medical Journal Case Reports, and  Saudi Medical Journal)

Research

Dr. Lew completed a 3-year project funded by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), studying telemedicine in the peritoneal dialysis population. Her clinical research interest focuses on chronic kidney disease, kidney function, peritoneal dialysis, anemia, hemodialysis and pharmacology. Her research has been funded continuously since 1996. She mentors medical students and medical residents in research projects or clinical cases resulting in publications. She serves as a grant reviewer for the American Society of Nephrology’s Kidney X, National Institute of Health, and National Institute on Aging. She has more than 90 peer reviewed publications, 15 book chapters and about 90 abstracts.
